Let’s dive right in:
During its entire lifetime, a housefly never travels more than a hundred feet from the place where it was born.
In addition, a fly travels about 30,500 mm in its lifetime and never more than 100 feet from the place that it was born.
For humans like you, that would be like if you only traveled 20,000 feet in your lifetime and never traveled outside of a 3.7 mile radius of the hospital bed where your mother gave birth!
What?!
The world is beautiful. These flies don’t know what they’re missing. Imagine if you never explored past 4 miles in any direction. Of course, we have much more access to opportunities and resources than your basic housefly, but since that’s the case, why don’t we take more advantage of the resources we’ve been born into?
There’s a different creature that has wings just like a fly, but travels a much greater distance. The Bar Tailed Godwit is a 13-15 inch bird that travels a 14,000 mile trip twice a year. This bird travels approximately 1.5 million miles in its lifetime!
That’s over 189 trips around the Earth!
Even the most dedicated human world travelers can ooh and aweh at this distance.
If a common housefly were the same size as the Bar Tailed Godwit, it would still only be traveling about half a mile in its lifetime…
The point is: You don’t need unlimited resources to see the world. All you need is the desire to see the world. If you have the desire, you can put together an action plan to make it happen.
Like I said, the world is beautiful! Who doesn’t have the desire to see the world? Or at least a few of the amazing sights housed here on Earth:
- Egyptian Pyramids
- The Great Wall of China
- The Great Barrier Reef
- The Grand Canyon
- Niagra Falls
- The Tropical Rainforest
- The Serengeti Plains
Just to name a few.
I’m not asking you to take multiple trips around the world. Everyone has a different comfort level where travel is concerned. I’m simply asking you to disrupt that comfort level a little bit. I’m simply asking you to travel a little more than you are used to. Go see a place you’ve never seen before. Stop making excuses and take the time to make it happen. There’s too much wonder out there not to explore.
Don’t be the fly. Be the Bar Tailed Godwit.
Spread your Godwit Wings!
